European league round up weekend 16/3/13

After a fantastic midweek of European competition we were all looking forward to another exciting weekend in Europes top domestic leagues, and they didn’t disappoint.

Here is what happened throughout Europe over the weekend.

Austria
Austria Vienna extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a thumping 4-0 win away to Mattersburg. Red Bull Salzburg are the nearest rivals but they could only manage a draw against Ried. Bottom club Wacker Innsbruck were defeated 3-2 at Sturm Graz. Elsewhere Rapid Vienna and Admira played out a 1 all draw. The top of the table looks like this, Austria Vienna (64), Salzburg (51), Sturm Graz (43), Rapid Vienna (42).

Its very much looking like Austria Vienna will clinch their 24th league title this season.

Belgium
In the ever complicated Belgian Jupiler League, Gent and Anderlecht played out a nil nil draw while Club Brugge defeated Lierse 3-0. The top six go into the play offs for the league title, carrying over half of their points from the regular season. Anderlecht are top, with Zulte Waregem, Genk, Club Brugge, Lokeren and Standard Liege making up the top six.

Croatia
Dinamo Zagreb are ten points clear at the top of the league, that’s despite a drab 0-0 draw with Istra 1961. An 8th league title in a row looking more and more likely every week for the dominant 14 time Croatian champions.

Czech Republic
Viktoria Plzen maintained their 3 point lead at the top of the Gambrinus Liga with a devastating 4 nil hammering of Dukla Prague, Sparta Prague remain second after managing a 2-1 victory over 15th placed Hradec Kralove.

Denmark
FC Copenhagen have won all 9 of their league titles since 1993 and its looking very likely they will make that 10 this year. They are a massive 16 points clear of 2nd place Randers who defeated Silkeborg 1-0 at the weekend. Nordsjaelland are a point behind Randers although they do have a game in hand after their game versus Aalborg was called off.

England
If the premiership title wasn’t already wrapped up….it is now. Current champions Manchester City lost 2-0 versus champions league chasing Everton, Manchester United capitalised defeating Reading. They champions elect are now a whopping 15 points ahead of their city rivals. Elsewhere Arsenal best Swansea 2-0 whilst Tottenham were shocked at home with a one nil loss to Fulham.

France
PSG had a golden chance to go 7 points clear of Lyon, especially considering they were 2-0 up against Saint-Etienne, as it happened ASSE came back and the game ended 2-2. Lyon had lost heavily 4-1 against Bastia the previous day. Nancy are still at the foot of the table despite their 1 nil victory against Nice.

Germany
Relentless Bayern Munich have all but sewed up their 23rd league title they had another good win this time 2-1 away to Leverkusen. Attention has already turned to the other champions league spots, Borussia Dortmunds 5-1 win at home to Freiburg almost confirmed their passage. Leverkusen still look likely despite the Bayern defeat. 4th and 5th place Frankfurt and Schalke will both be annoyed at slipping up and not taking advantage of the others misfortunes, Frankfurt lost 2-1 at home to Stuttgart while Nuremberg beat Schalke 3 nil to round off a miserable week for Schalke.

Greece
After Olympiacos sealed their 40th league title last weekend, they could of been forgiven for taking the foot of the pedal away to Kerkyra, but they still won 1-0. PAOK kept up the pressure on Asteras Tripolis in the battle for 2nd place, both teams recording 2 nil victories.

Italy
Juventus are the runaway leaders here and they showed again why they are going to win their 2nd league in a row with a comfortable 2-0 win over Bologna. Serie A has lost its fourth champions league spot and that makes the race to finish in the top 3 all the more exciting. Juve are certainties with Napoli (56), Milan (54) and Fiorentina (51) all in contention. Napoli won 3-2 at home to Atalanta, Milan winning 2-0 versus Palermo and Fiorentina also winning (3-2 vs Genoa). Inter Milan (47) remain in contention and they do have a game on hand after the weekends trip to Sampdoria was postponed due to bad weather.

The Netherlands
The traditional big three in Holland are doing it again. PSV were first up on saturday and a 2-0 win at home to Waalwijk put them top of the league…briefly, Ajaxs win 3-2 away to AZ put them back on top, Feyenoord kept up the pressure as well with a 2-0 home win against Utrecht. 1 point separates Ajax and their two big rivals, this looks like the league that will go all the way down to the last day at the moment.

Portugal
Benfica hammered Guimaraes 4-0 last night after FC Porto could only manage a draw 1 all with Maritimo. Benfica now have daylight between themselves and Porto a full 4 points in their quest for league title number 33

Russia
CSKA Moscow moved seven points clear of Anzhi after Anzhi were held 1-1 against Krylya Sovetov Samara. CSKA had earlier beat Krasnodar 1-0. Zenit remain 3rd after their 1-0 victory against M Saransk.

Scotland
St Mirren won the League Cup with a entertaining 3-2 win over Hearts. Celtic continue to breeze through the league, although they had to come from 3-1 down at home to Aberdeen before winning 4-3.

Spain
Barcelona are still 13 points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the league after a fine 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. Real Madrid came from behind to beat Real Mallorca 5-2. Atletico stay third after a 2 nil win at Osasuna.

Turkey
Besiktas fell behind the top two after losing 3-1 at home to Kasimpasa. They are on 43 points, Fenerbahce (46) and Galatasaray (50) were both victorious away from home. Gala 3-1 vs Kayserispor and Fener 2-1 against Antalyaspor.
