With the new football season starting throughout Europe over the next few weeks, it’s time for my predictions for the forthcoming season.
UEFA Champions League – Real Madrid
At this moment in time I can only see Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich winning this season’s Champions League, sure Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Juventus all have the ability to win it especially given the nature of knockout competition where an element of luck plays its part particularly in the latter stages. Out of the three favourites you could make convincing arguments for all of them, but I can’t help but feel after Barcelonas historic treble Real Madrid will be extra motivated to stop their great rivals becoming the first club to retain the trophy in the Champions League era.
Premier League – Chelsea
Runners Up – Manchester United
Third Place – Arsenal
Fourth Place – Manchester City
The only guarantee in the premiership season that’s about to start is the winner will be one of those four teams listed above, Chelsea looked strong throughout last season and with Mourinho at the helm I can see them winning again this year, I do expect a stronger challenge from the other 3 than last year. Arsenal have strengthened as have Manchester United and I can see those 2 pushing Chelsea until the end. In my opinion Manchester City haven’t done enough in this transfer window and they will finish fourth comfortably ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham yet far enough behind the contenders that Pellegrini will be sacked before the season ends.
Serie A – Juventus
Ligue 1 – Paris St-Germain
Bundesliga – Bayern Munich
The domestic titles in Italy, France and Germany will all be staying exactly where they ended up the last two seasons. I’m sure people will try and make arguments for Roma, Wolfsburg, Lyon and others to make challenges at the title but the reality is the current champions in these leagues are just too strong at the moment.
La Liga – Barcelona
I just can’t see Rafael Benitez’ side winning the double and since I’ve tipped them to win the Champions League, the logic is that Barcelona will sneak La Liga, probably by two points as both teams battle neck and neck until the final week of the season. The usual Cristiano Ronaldo / Lionel Messi debate will take up much of the Season as both players score over 50 goals in all competitions again. Look for Cristiano Ronaldo to become Real Madrid’s all time top goalscorer around October, a phenomenal achievement from the player who was signed from Manchester United in 2009.
The Netherlands – Ajax Amsterdam
Portugal – FC Porto
Russia – Zenit St Petersburg
Turkey – Fenerbahce
Scotland – Celtic
Europa League – Borussia Dortmund
